My work explores the aesthetic and material relationship between built and natural worlds. Functional yet sculptural, pieces draw attention to incidental beauty abundant in these two realms; Shapes are often inspired by brutalism and industrial architecture, and feature sublime clean lines with strong, minimal silhouettes (jugs inspired by power station cooling towers, textured soap dishes inspired by corrugated roofing sheeting) while the glazing speaks of more organic places - woodland, valley and coastal wilderness. Slip work, oxides and sections of unglazed ceramic combine to evoke textures found within geology and landscape, drawing attention to the components and materiality of clay. Utilitarian shapes and rich surfaces incorporating a vibrant natural palette give a hint of mid-century design. I am always seeking to create intrigue with my work by contrasting sumptuous, luxurious qualities with the raw and unrefined.
